2016 US Open purse: Dustin Johnson takes home $1.8 million in prize money

Michael Madrid-USA TODAY Sports

The 2016 US Open came down to the wire with an eventful and controversial finish. Despite having the final round overshadowed by a possible penalty review, Dustin Johnson was able to come away with the win and his first major championship. Johnson’s career has been renowned for missed opportunities in major championships. There have been several, including last year at the US Open. But, now those are a thing of the pas and Johnson takes home a $1.8 million prize for his effort.

Although the purse is the same amount Jordan Spieth won last year, it is still tied for the richest prizes in golf. Even though Johnson had never won a major championship, he’s had a very lucrative career. The winner’s purse will only add to his bank account and bring his on-course earnings to nearly $35 million. Finally breaking through in a major championship is the biggest victory for Johnson, but nearly $2 million in earnings is just a nice cherry on top.

Johnson comes away as the big winner, but he’s hardly the only player who had a lucrative week. The purse is set up for the top two finishers to each make at least a million dollars. Ties end up factoring heavily into the final payout, but the top 12 players all won at least $200,000. The top seven players all won at least $313,000 with the top four winning at least $745,000.

Shane Lowry began the final round in control at 7-under, four strokes clear of the field. He wasn’t able to capture the success he had in the first three rounds, however, struggling his way through Oakmont on Sunday. He shot a 76 on Sunday to finish in a tie for second place. By dropping from the lead to a three-way tie for second, Lowry cost himself more than $1.1 million in prize money

It was also quite the drop for Spieth. A year ago he won $1.8 million. This year, he takes home less than $50,000 after finishing in a tie for 37th place. Here is a partial look at the full payout as the final numbers are finalized.
