Brandel Chamblee says Rory McIlroy will regret Olympics comments for the ‘rest of his life’

It was an eventful Tuesday at Royal Troon, where the topic was not The Open, but rather golf in the Olympics.

Ian Rutherford-USA TODAY Sports

Fire upon fire. Rory McIlroy lit up Royal Troon on Tuesday in a dramatic press conference where he ripped the entire idea of golf in the Olympics. McIlroy said he did not get into golf to “grow the game,” a reason touted for the push to include golf in the Games, but rather “to win championships.”

McIlroy then capped his stance with a massive haymaker that he’d watch the Olympics, just not the golf, instead focusing on track and swimming to “watch the stuff that matters.”

Rory’s strong comments were then met by an equally strong critique from the Golf Channel “Live From” set later. Lead analysts Brandel Chamblee, who does not hold back on criticizing a player when he feels a certain way, said Rory would “regret the comments for the rest of his life.” Chamblee called it an insult to the players who are going, like Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson and Henrik Stenson. It was a fascinating rebuke to Rory’s rip job earlier in the day at Royal Troon.

Whether you agree with Chamblee’s critique, he was on to something when he said it was one of the more dramatic Tuesdays ever at a major. And none of it has to do with The Open.
