Bubba Watson’s visit to the ‘coffin bunker’ ends in disaster at The Open

The Postage Stamp is a tiny little hole that should not cause this much carnage on the scorecard, but Bubba Watson was the first big victim this week at The Open.

Bubba Watson’s record at The Open and playing links golf is ... bad. He’s never been able to adapt well to links golf, often bowing out of The Open early after just 36 frustrating holes.

But that was all going change. Things were going so well for Bubba on Thursday morning at The Open, where he started 5-under through his first seven holes to take the lead. Then it all came undone in a matter of minutes.

The big hitter arrived at the shortest hole on the course, the famed “Postage Stamp” par-3 8th. It was playing just over 120 yards, and Bubba’s tee shot was about three or four yards away from being perfect. What he ended up with was a plugged lie in the “coffin bunker.”

Bubba had no misconception about actually aiming at the flag or trying to get on this minuscule green, instead opting to just blast one over everything into the junk. He compounded the unenviable situation, however, when he duffed a flop shot from that junk.

He came to the tee box with the lead, and just a measly 120 yards later, he had dropped three shots thanks to a triple-bogey six. He’s now all the way back at even-par and completely off the leaderboard.
