Shanks, duffs and flops: The worst shots from The Open so far

Royal Troon was playing easy, but that doesn’t mean the best in the world went through it without some ugly moments.

The opening round at Royal Troon was the day to go low at The Open, with perfect scoring conditions for the field. There was not going to be the kind of carnage you can get at The Open when the wind starts blowing and it rains sideways. That still didn’t prevent a handful of players from providing the moments that made us hackers at home take solace in our games.

There were several messes on Thursday, but my personal favorite was Matt Jones launching one completely off the course and over the railway running down the side of the 11th hole. The most impressive part of the sequence was Jones just launching his club on the follow through -- ProTracer had not even picked the ball up yet and his club and had been thrown aside and off the tee.
