2016 British Open tee times: Saturday’s pairings anchored by Phil Mickelson, Henrik Stenson

It’s the weekend! And The Open has a tasty final pairing for the third round at Royal Troon.

After two marathon days at Royal Troon, the Open Championship field has been cut down for the weekend. The R&A has a relatively inclusive cut rule, letting the top 70 and ties through to the weekend (the U.S. Open, by contrast, cuts all but the top 60 and ties). This year, that means 81 players will get to tee it up for 36 more holes, which is about as large as a field will get on the weekend at any tournament. There’s also no secondary cut to get it down for Sunday, as would happen on the PGA Tour.

The R&A will start them at 3:25 a.m. on Saturday back in the States, which is almost two hours later than the past two days with the full 156-man field. The Golf Channel coverage will start at 4 a.m. ET, five minutes after the golden child, Jordan Spieth, tees off alongside Brandt Snedeker. Spieth sounded resigned on Friday afternoon when he came in from a round played in the worst of the weather conditions so far this week. Spieth made the weekend right on the number, so he’s a good 14 shots back with 36 to play. He left the door slightly open that he could get into it, but sounded realistic that the championship is gone. Nevertheless, he’ll be an early featured player on the broadcast with Snedeker.

The anchor pairing will go at 10:20 a.m. ET, or 3:20 p.m. local in Scotland. It’s a strong one too, as Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson will be the two to tee off on Saturday. Mickelson holds a one-shot lead over Stenson, who made a big late push at Phil’s lead with a 6-under 65 on Friday. In the middle of Mickelson’s round, it looked like this might be a runaway for the 2013 Open winner. He led by five shots, the next-closest player was Soren Kjeldsen (a relatively untested threat), and all the big names teeing off later were about to get crushed by the worst weather of the week. But there was Stenson, rolling in three birdies on the difficult inward nine that even left him with a realistic chance of matching Phil at 10-under on the 18th green. The Swede’s final birdie putt just blew by the edge, so he’ll come back Saturday down a shot.

The weather is supposed to stay “proper Scottish” over the weekend, which might make for longer rounds. But they typically move pretty quickly at The Open, even playing some of Thursday’s opening rounds in under 4.5 hours, and that was in groups of three. The weather will no doubt slow things down, but still expect Mickelson and Stenson to be on the 18th and wrapping up around 2:30 p.m. ET (barring no official delays, which are pretty rare at The Open).
