British Open TV schedule 2016: Start time for Sunday’s final round at Royal Troon

We are almost there people! Just 18 holes remain in the 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon, where Henrik Stenson holds a one-shot lead over Phil Mickelson. Everyone else in the field is a longshot at this point. Stenson leads Mickelson by one shot, and the next closest player is Bill Haas just ... five shots back. It will be shocking if our 2016 champion golfer of the year does not come from that anchor pairing, which will get started at 9:35 a.m. ET.

The Golf Channel and NBC team will put together a 10-hour broadcast on Sunday, capping off a monster week of almost 50 hours of coverage. They said from the start that they were going to go big, covering the very first tee shot from Colin Montgomerie on Thursday at 1:30 a.m. ET. It’s the first time a major championship has been broadcast from that very first tee shot until the Sunday finale.

The fourth round broadcast will come on the air at 4 a.m. on Golf Channel, and the aforementioned Monty should be pretty deep into his final round. That’s because the Troon native is in last place among players to make the cut, and will play as a solo on Sunday (an odd-numbered 81 players made the cut). Monty tees off at 2:20 a.m. ET and his round should not run more than three hours as a solo. But aside from a few of those early groups, Golf Channel and NBC will be live for a majority of every player’s round.

This marks the return of NBC to a major championship Sunday after a year on the bench. They were the historic partner of the USGA, carrying the U.S. Open for years before that organization signed a massive 10-year deal with FOX. So NBC went hard after The Open, winning a new contract that was supposed to start in 2017. The network, however, worked out a separate deal with ESPN, the longtime USA-based partner of the R&A, to take over a year early. The folks at ESPN figured 2015 was a good way to end it, the venue being the championship’s most famous and historic: St. Andrews.

The year off must have been painful for Johnny Miller, who was back in the booth this week and bringing the heat on Saturday when NBC picked up the coverage for the first time at 7 a.m. ET. It was glorious to have Johnny back in the booth with Dan Hicks, and Sunday should be more of the same. They will take the reins again at 7 a.m. and carry us across the finish line, which should come sometime between 1:30 and 2 p.m. ET.
