The Open is set up for a classic Sunday head-to-head matchup at Royal Troon. It’s been a while since we’ve have had two players separate themselves so drastically from the rest of the field like this, and then play the entire weekend together in the final tee time of the last 36 holes.
British Open 2016: Time and TV schedule for Round 4 on Sunday
NBC is back in major championship golf and they’ll have a two-man duel to spotlight in the final round of The Open.

But no one has come close to Phil Mickelson and Henrik Stenson this week. The big Swede will start the final round with a one-shot lead over Mickelson, but they’re effectively tied given this is major championship golf. No one is within five shots of either player, so it’s hard to see anyone else presenting much of a challenge. Mickelson has not won a tournament since his first Open Championship, that win at Muirfield in 2013. Stenson was the runner-up that day, and had just endured his own almost two-year winless streak until getting on the board just a couple weeks ago with a victory at the Euro Tour’s BMW International Open.
It’s not like everyone else in the field has played like chumps. Mickelson and Stenson have just happened to post two of the best performances of the entire season relative to the field. Unfortunately for one, that performance won’t go rewarded with a major championship.

The two-man duel should make it fairly easy for the broadcast, which won’t exactly have to jump around a ton or scramble to keep up with a bunch of leaderboard movement. It’s an 18-hole walk with one group, mixing in some highlights from the groups ahead during downtime. NBC is back for their first major championship Sunday since that 2014 U.S. Open at Pinehurst. That final round was a complete bore, as Martin Kaymer went unchallenged and cruised to his second major. Then FOX took over USGA events and NBC was left with a gap year before an early takeover of The Open from ESPN.
NBC will have the final six or seven hours of coverage on Sunday, starting at 7 a.m. ET. Golf Channel, their Comcast sister network, will have the early round coverage beginning at 4 a.m. ET. This is the first time in the 20-plus year history of the Golf Channel that a major championship has appeared on its air. They carried the championship for some 14 hours on bothThursday and Friday. Dan Hicks and Johnny Miller will have your call on the walk in with Phil and Henrik, and NBC newcomer Mike Tirico mixed in as well in his new hosting duties. Terry Gannon and Nick Faldo will handle most of the work on Golf Channel in the wee hours of the morning.
