Henrik Stenson receives his Claret Jug after historic Open

He earned it.

Henrik Stenson has won his first major championship. Stenson edged Phil Mickelson in a Sunday duel for the ages at The Open at Royal Troon, getting around the course in 63 strokes to hold off a hard-charging Mickelson.

To the victor goes the spoils, and Stenson gets $1.5 million in prize money for finishing atop the 156-man field. He also gets the Claret Jug, which the R&A presented to him in a nice ceremony after his round ended Sunday afternoon.

The Claret Jug is the oldest, greatest trophy in the sport. Stenson, as the 145th Open’s championship, gets it.

It’s a deserved capper for a really remarkable week of golf for Stenson. His worst rounds of the weekend were matching 68s on Thursday and Saturday. He supplemented them with a Friday 65 and then his Sunday 63, making for one of the best major performances of this or any era. Stenson took control with a 51-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole, and he never exactly looked back. Now the world’s best golfer without a major is somebody else.
