2016 PGA Championship leaderboard: Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth struggle late at Baltusrol

Jordan Spieth, Bubba Watson, and Dustin Johnson all joined Rory McIlroy toward the bottom of the leaderboard on Thursday afternoon.

Hey, remember when we told you yesterday how awesome the PGA Championship usually is because the set-up generally allows stars to excel and play like stars?

Uh, well, sorry. It’s usually like that, promise.

Baltusrol has traditionally produced big-name champions at the major events it has hosted. Jack Nicklaus won here twice, and Phil Mickelson took home the Wanamaker Trophy here in 2005 the last time it held a major championship. Thursday hasn’t yet produced those kinds of rounds from the game’s best players in the 98th PGA Championship. After Rory McIlroy’s 4-over 74 short-game struggle this morning, a number of big names joined him in the leaderboard’s toilet this afternoon.

Jordan Spieth doesn’t have a single birdie on his card yet on the day -- only a double-bogey 6 at the par-4 7th to show on his clean card of pars. He’s in a tie for 82nd right now. He’s playing alongside Bubba Watson, who’s turned in four straight bogeys after starting the day under par -- Watson’s at 3-over. He’s in a tie for 102nd. Things are even worse for U.S. Open Champion and second-ranked Dustin Johnson. He’s 6-over par with 6 holes still to play. Woooooooof.

Need context on how haywire things have gone for the stars at Baltusrol? Dustin Johnson was the betting favorite entering the tournament -- and he’s beating exactly seven players. Two of those seven are club professionals.

Things haven’t gone much better for other big names, either. Sergio Garcia’s at a middling 1-over, along with Phil Mickelson -- who’s in the clubhouse at 71. Open champion Henrik Stenson is 1-under. Rickie Fowler and world No. 1 Jason Day lead the way for the big names at 2-under, but both finished their rounds in the morning when the golf course was yielding a bit better scores.

Two-time major champion Martin Kaymer’s the sole big name making a move this afternoon. He’s just one shot off Jimmy Walker’s morning pace, and tied with Emiliano Grillo. After a major swing reconstruction, Kaymer hasn’t won since taking home his last major championship at the 2014 US Open.

Here’s a full leaderboard with a couple hours left in the opening round in Springfield.
