PGA Championship tee times 2016: Pairings and start time for Sunday’s final round

Sunday at the PGA Championship may be a chaotic marathon, or it might be absolutely nothing but a whole bunch of sitting around the clubhouse again. We won’t really know until Mother Nature decides for us come 7 a.m. ET, when the PGA of America plans to restart the third round at Baltusrol.

There are still five groups who have not even started the third round. Only 37 players out of 86 finished the third round before the horn blew on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. Everyone who already started has to be back in position for a 7 a.m. restart of the third round, and then those last five tee times will start rolling off No. 1 as well. The 36-hole leaders, Robert Streb and Jimmy Walker, will go out in that last group of the third round at 7:40 a.m. ET. If all goes well, the goal is to have Streb and Walker through 54 holes by about Noon. Here’s the end of that tee sheet for the third round:

7:00 a.m.: Hideki Matsuyama, Harris English
7:10 a.m.: Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka
7:20 a.m.: Henrik Stenson, Martin Kaymer
7:30 a.m.: Emiliano Grillo, Jason Day
7:40 a.m.: Jimmy Walker, Robert Streb

The fourth round is where it gets interesting. The PGA of America is not planning to re-pair for the fourth round. This is the customary practice of putting the players together according to their score for the final two rounds of ... every single golf tournament. The players in last go out first in the morning and the leaders are out last in that anchor spot on the tee sheet.

That’s not going to happen on Sunday for the fourth round. Once we get through those last five tee times of the third round, they will start sending the same twosomes out again off No. 1 for the fourth round. So no matter your score, you are playing with the same guy again in the fourth round. Those fourth round tee times will start at 8:40 a.m. and go in nine-minute intervals up to 3:16 p.m. ET.

It gets particularly chaotic when you consider that the third and fourth round will be running concurrent for much of the day. For example, Kevin Kisner and Padraig Harrington shot 65 on Saturday and got into the clubhouse before the horn sounded. They’re both inside the top 10 and would typically have a late tee time for the final round. Instead, they’ll be out there early on Sunday playing their final round and maybe, maybe posting a number that could be enough for a trophy presentation late Sunday night or Monday, many hours after finishing up ahead of those last tee times. They may be piling up birdies while Walker and Streb still play the third round up ahead. Madness!

This all, of course, presumes the weather holds off on Sunday. The forecast is awful, calling for storms the entire day. The schedule is optimistic even without weather delays -- that last 3:16 p.m. tee time would ideally finish just before 8 p.m. and sunset, but it’s optimistic. Nine-minute intervals is an aggressive pace and probably not realistic, causing jams once they’re out there. And then if there’s lightning in the area or more water making the course unplayable, we’ll have just a bunch of waiting and sitting around and hopefully a Monday and not a Tuesday finish.

Here’s the fourth round tee sheet -- again, this is all weather dependent. If it’s bad from the start early in the morning, they may wait and just re-pair them for Monday.
