2016 PGA Championship prize money: Jimmy Walker takes home $1.8 million payout

The PGA may be the 4th major of the season, but it pays as well as the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship.

Eric Sucar-USA TODAY Sports

Jimmy Walker not only went wire to wire to capture his first major title, but the five-time PGA Tour winner calmly held defending champ and world No. 1 Jason Day and the rest of the PGA Championship field at bay on his way to a $1.8 million payday.

With $10 million to disburse among the players, the PGA Championship is right up there with the big boys — the Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship, which comprise the other three majors — in rewarding those who rise to the top of the leaderboard at Glory’s Last Shot.

Of course, the biggest cash reward goes to the winner, and Walker more than doubled his 2016 earnings, which were $1.5 million prior to the PGA, with a 14-under finish, good enough for a one-shot victory over Jason Day. Day’s consolation prize of $1.08 million is not exactly chump change, and the runner-up’s cut boosts his yearly winnings to $7.6 million from the $6.5 million he had earned before Baltusrol.

Though third place misses out on the millions, Daniel Summerhays probably won’t turn his nose up at his third-place check of $680,000. That tidy sum gets him up to $1.9 million for the season in which he just posted his second top-10 finish.

While we’re sure Dustin Johnson would have enjoyed making the cut, he still padded his previously tour-leading bank account ($7.2 million before the week) by $3,000, the amount that each player who misses the cut (yes you, Rory McIlroy) gets to salt away.

The tournament’s complete purse breakdown includes the winner’s prize down to the guy who comes in DFL after making the cut. Ties can change the amounts, but no one’s going home empty-handed.
