Olympic golf 2016: Tee times for Friday’s second round

The drive for gold continues on Friday in Rio.

Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

The first Olympic golf competition in more than a century proceeded without controversy or incident on Thursday, which might be surprising if all you’ve done is pay attention to the negative headlines over the past few months. No doubt, golf’s return to the games has been rocky and it’s impossible to say this week will be an unqualified success. There are too many big names missing and the format is too bland.

But now that the Olympics have actually started -- that week with these famous golfers immersing themselves in all the other sports and the athletes’ village was awesome -- and the golf is actually being played, it’s actually been pretty good! If nothing else, it’s fascinating to see pros we’ve come to watch on the same schedule and at the same events every year get dropped into a totally different situation in Rio. Of course the players down there are going to have a more positive outlook on golf’s inclusion in the games, but the genuine comments and unanimity of these pros calling this week life-changing and beyond description is encouraging.

The second round will follow the same format as the first, running the 60-man field off in 20 threesomes beginning at 7:30 a.m. local time in Rio. It’s obviously a small field that makes the tee sheet much more manageable, but this is winter right now in Brazil and darkness does come pretty early in the evening. If the winds do pick up, as this course is designed to play, then the pace could slow down on Friday. But there really should be no issues getting everyone smoothly through to the weekend, where they will all continue on in this no-cut event. Everyone gets 72 holes, no matter how ugly their score gets.

Golf Channel will carry the entire round right from the first tee ball at 6:30 a.m. ET. Unlike some of the tape delayed primetime events we’re hearing so much about, golf is shown live all four days from start to finish.
