2016 Travelers Championship: Tee times, pairings for Sunday’s final round

Daniel Berger is in line for his second win of the summer and making strong argument for his first berth in the Ryder Cup.

The Travelers Championship has always embraced its tough spot on the PGA Tour schedule. The annual stop in Hartford usually comes the week after the U.S. Open in late June, when players are coming off a week at the “toughest test in golf” and probably looking for a break. The Olympics have thrown so many events out of their normal slot and the Travelers is one of several. The good news is they’re not the week after the U.S. Open this year. The bad news is they’re the week after the PGA, the third major in just over a month’s time, and the week before the new Olympic golf competition.

Still, the Travelers has managed to draw a strong field and put on a great event in this unenviable spot. Hartford always shows up and the organizers of this tournament have figured out a way to promote it and draw some of the bigger names each year. They caught a bad hand on the weekend with the forecast forcing the PGA Tour to move third round tee times way up to first thing in the morning on Saturday, finishing play in the early afternoon to get in before the storms. Saturday is usually the biggest draw of the weekend for the local crowd, so the change in schedule had to be a bit of a buzzkill.

Sunday’s schedule is back to the more traditional format with the forecast relatively clear. The final anchor pairing will go off at 2 p.m. ET, setting up a finish around 6 p.m. on CBS. Daniel Berger goes to the final round with a three-shot lead, built on his scorching third-round 62. That 8-under round has him at 15-under for the week. This TPC River Highlands course always yields some super low rounds and a winning number can push 20-under. So a three-shot lead is not some comfortable margin.

Should Berger finish the job, it would be his second win this summer and throw another late name into the Ryder Cup roster debate. Jimmy Walker, who was not really on the U.S. roster radar, locked up a spot by winning a major last week at Baltusrol. Berger is 18th in the points standings and a second win would be a huge boost and if we’re serious about putting new blood on the team, he’s one of the prime candidates to help with that turnover.
