There are just 18 more holes to play in the PGA Tour season and some of the biggest names on the circuit will be fighting for the biggest cash windfall in the game. For the second straight day, Dustin Johnson and Kevin Chappell will play in the final twosome at East Lake for the TOUR Championship. But now right there, just two shots off the pace, is Rory McIlroy, the Northern Irishman making his move on Saturday with the round of the day, a 66.

It’s not the very best case scenario for the PGA Tour, but having two of the game’s top bombers and preeminent talents in Rory and Dustin battling in the final round of the season...well, that’s a juicy scenario. The entire week has been a little overshadowed by all the Ryder Cup hoopla. There’s been a little trash talk back and forth between the two teams and the uncertainty of the fourth and final USA captain’s pick, set to be made Sunday night, has hung over the entire tournament.
That’s probably not what the PGA Tour wants for its FedExCup Playoffs finale, but Sunday could provide some fireworks if DJ and Rory go toe-to-toe for the grand prize. Dustin Johnson is inside the top five in the FedExCup standings and holds that all-important “control your own destiny” card. So if he wins the TOUR Championship, he wins the FedExCup and the $10 million bonus prize. Rory is just outside the top 5 at No. 6, so he would need a little help from DJ were he to win in Atlanta. Chappell would need a lot of help to win the overall prize, but hey, he’s never won on the PGA Tour before so just winning the instant tournament would be a life-changer. Worry about the whole dang playoffs later.
The TOUR Championship is the smallest, most exclusive field of the PGA Tour season. Only 30 players make it to Atlanta, so they tournament has all the flexibility in the world when it comes to setting the tee sheet. There are just 15 groups all off No. 1 tee, going 10 minutes apart for a quick and breezy pace. There have been no weather disruptions to speak of this year and Sunday should be clean again. The target is a 6 p.m. ET finish on NBC, so they will get it going just before Noon with the final twosome off at 1:55 p.m. ET.
