Phil Mickelson yanked his tee shot way out of bounds at Hazeltine

Phil Mickelson is nothing if not entertaining off the tee, as his wicked pull out of bounds on the sixth hole of the morning foursome match at Hazeltine proved.

A reload from partner Rickie Fowler in the alternate-shot format wasn’t a whole lot better, but at least it gave Lefty a shot — right-handed with his iron turned backwards.

The Americans eventually conceded the hole, which put Europe’s Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan 2-up moving to the seventh tee.

Mickelson’s adventure off the tee was hardly surprising for the Euros, who expected the Ryder Cup vet to hit it hither and yon.

“Massive questions off the tee, as we’ve seen many times over the years,” was the European take in a recent Golf Digest poll of anonymous PGA and European Tour pros. “His driving can be all over the place. He’s more comfortable moving the ball left to right than right to left. His big weakness, though, is his stubbornness. Even when it’s obvious he’s driving poorly, he won’t stop hitting driver. Which means cheap holes for the opposition.”

Team USA was buckled in for Phil the Thrill antics, as well.

“There’s a roller coaster aspect because he still is so aggressive,” said one participant in the GD survey. “So, he’s going to win and lose based on that roller coaster ride.”

As if on cue, Mickelson and Fowler bounced back to pick up the next two holes and made the turn at 1-up.
