Justin Thomas is in the early stages of what should be a long and successful career, but even at a young age, he’s not exactly hurting for cash. The money, at this point, is secondary to Thomas making the leap on the PGA Tour and becoming one of its superstars, a spot that some pegged for him since his rookie season two years ago. But the 23-year-old is about to have a pretty damn lucrative trip to Hawaii.

Thomas won more than $1.2 million last week by taking the 2017 opener, the SBS Tournament of Champions, in Maui. Now he’s closing in on his second-career win on American soil by sweeping the Aloha swing to earn another million-plus check. Thomas would bank a winner’s sum of $1,080,000 should he close out the Sony Open at historic Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

The purse this week totals an even $6 million, which is actually slightly smaller than last week’s pot at the Tournament of Champions. That field was 32 players deep, restricted to just winners from the preceding year’s events. So even the last-place finisher there earned more than $60,000 in a cushy no-cut event. The Sony is a full-field event with a cut, including 73 players making a secondary cut and playing the full 72 holes. So the last-place money is significantly smaller than the riches doled out to last week’s small field.

Thomas has $9,778,604 in career earnings and this will be his third win in his last five starts, so that total has taken a big jump in the last two-and-a-half months. But again, the money is secondary to the superstar breakout for the rabid Alabama fan, who said Monday’s National Championship game loss was the most upset he’s ever been.

Another $1 million check and a dominant start to the season would be a nice consolation for JT. We can’t wait to see what comes next back on the mainland.

Here are the payout totals for the top 10 this week. These totals will obviously be impacted by ties and we’ll update when results go final on Oahu.
