Farmers Insurance Open 2017 schedule: Time, TV coverage for Round 3

This is probably not what CBS had in mind for its return to the PGA Tour. It was all set up for Jim Nantz and friends to come back to golf coverage at Tiger Woods’ first tournament in some 17 months. The only problem is that CBS doesn’t join the Farmers Insurance Open coverage until the weekend, and Tiger’s game wasn’t good enough to make it that far this week.

It’s an unfortunate blow for the TV coverage but could not have come as some big shocker. No one knew what kind of game Woods would have when he came back, and it wasn’t expected that he would light the world on fire. He wasn’t a disaster, but his first two rounds were fairly ugly and he missed the cut by a good four shots.

Joining the Big Cat on the wrong side of the cut was Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, and Rickie Fowler. So a huge chunk of this event’s star power and attraction is now gone with two more rounds to go in La Jolla.

This is not the kind of big splash that CBS had hoped for in its first golf broadcast since last August. The network covers 22 events throughout the year but takes a break throughout football season, signing off at The Barclays until the West Coast swing. Jim Nantz will be there fresh off his AFC Championship call, swapping out Phil Simms for Nick Faldo in the 18th tower. They’ll cover the weekends at the rest of the West Coast swing then take a break for NCAA basketball to make a triumphant return at the Masters.

CBS will take the late portion of the coverage, coming on the air at 3 p.m. ET. But the usual Golf Channel split is still in play this season. It will have early round coverage from 1 to 2:30 p.m. ET.
