The Farmers Insurance Open lost a little — ok, a lot — of juice on Friday afternoon when the cut was made. We lost Tiger Woods, who was a good four shots short off the cut line in his first PGA Tour event in more than 500 days. That was obviously a big blow. No one changes the dynamic of a PGA Tour event and its broadcast like Tiger, especially when we haven’t seen him in so long.

Torrey Pines is one of the most beautiful courses on earth. Here’s how to watch Sunday’s final round in San Diego.

But in addition to Tiger, we also lost superstars like world No. 1 Jason Day, reigning player of the year Dustin Johnson, and SoCal favorite Rickie Fowler. So this Sunday on the PGA Tour could have been so much more, but we’ll still take some late January oceanside golf.
Phil Mickelson is four shots back of the lead at the start of the final round, so the local favorite will get plenty of final round TV time. Mickelson is 46 years old and still competing at the highest level on a weekly basis, even in just his second start back after an offseason that included two hernia surgeries. It’s a model for a younger 41-year-old Tiger, who has had many more violent injuries in his career but wants to still play competitively for as much as another decade.
Golf Channel and CBS will split the duties for the final round, an arrangement we’ve grown accustomed to over the years. CBS is back after taking a break for the football season, its last golf broadcast coming at The Barclays in late August. This brings agita for some, as CBS has been a repeated target of angst and frustration on Twitter over its golf broadcasts.
Yesterday wasn’t much different, and we were reminded that the egregious 30-minute blackout period still exists when we get the GC-CBS split:
Fortunately, streaming has helped abate some of this. The PGA Tour has put up a feed to bridge this gap but it’s still an obnoxious juggle that shouldn’t have to occur in 2017.
Golf Channel will start the coverage window at 1 p.m., just 15 minutes before Brandt Snedeker, Patrick Rodgers, and Tony Finau tee off No. 1. CBS’ coverage is set to run until 6:30 p.m. but I’d expect that last group to finish on the 18th a little later than that.
All coverage will be simulcast and streamed if you’re unable to get in front of a TV.
