PGA Tour fan runs onto course and jumps into pond to elude security

A Torrey Pines patron at the Farmers Insurance Open goes for a dip.

Harold Varner III

The Farmers Insurance Open took a bit of a gloomy turn this week when Tiger Woods, along with a host of other headline stars, missed the cut at Torrey Pines. It was anticlimactic and left us looking for entertainment at one of the PGA Tour’s better early-season events.

Fortunately, one fan on the outside of the ropes decided to take it upon himself to delight the crowd. Citizen journalist Harold Varner III, finished with his round and enjoying some time at what looks like a hospitality suite, whipped out his phone and captured this fan’s daring and presumably inebriated attempt to run onto the course.

He seemed determined to jump in this Torrey Pines hazard and when he emerged from the water to dry off, it appeared he had raised the white flag while surrounded by security. Then came his most admirable effort, in my opinion, as he tried to catch his captors off-guard and run off soaking wet across a golf course to what you would have to assume was a long distance to freedom. He didn’t get far ...

A face plant into the turf was really the only way this was going to end.
