Tiger Woods is in danger of missing the cut for the second straight week. After an opening round 77 on Thursday at the Dubai Desert Classic, Woods is a longshot to make the weekend over in the Middle East. The 5-over mark was his worst round in 29 loops through this course, where he’s won twice in his career. That score put him in 127th place and unfortunately for Woods, he posted that number in what were some favorable scoring conditions. He squandered that chance and now it appears his round on Friday, which will be in the later half of the draw, will be played in fairly intense winds whipping across Dubai.

Can Tiger make a desperate push to get to the weekend in Dubai?

Missing cuts has become a regularity for Tiger over the last three or four years. It was the rarest of anomalies for the first 10 to 12 years of his career and maybe his most impressive streak in a career full of them. Missing two cuts in a row to start your comeback, and by a fairly wide margin, was probably not what he had in mind. To add to it, this wasn’t exactly an easy trip. After missing the cut in San Diego last week, Woods waited around a couple days and then flew commercial around the world to Dubai. That’s a long flight to get just two days of competitive reps out of it, especially when there was a PGA Tour event down the road in Phoenix.
There will still be a sizable appearance fee check for Tiger patronizing the Dubai event, but it’s not a very productive trip if he can’t get four rounds. From the very beginning of Thursday’s round, he looked like a player who was not thrilled to be there. He didn’t look happy and his game going sideways throughout his 18-hole slog did little to improve matters.
Tiger will tee off at 3:35 a.m. ET back in the United States. That’s four hours later than his opening round, so you’ll have to get creative about watching this one. The west coasters, who had it good on Thursday, are probably out for Friday. If you, yanno, want to be a normal person, then just wake up on the slightly early side, get a cup of coffee, and watch his back nine before going to work for an unproductive Friday.
Woods should be finishing around 8 a.m. ET. Golf Channel will have his entire round on Friday morning, carrying the Dubai Desert Classic for a full six-hour broadcast window. If you’re unable to watch on TV, there will also be a simulcast stream up and running as you get ready for the day. Here’s hoping Tiger will at least make it interesting and threaten that cut line.
