2017 Waste Management Phoenix Open: Tee times, pairings for Sunday’s round

The Phoenix Open is the loudest event in golf and great alternative to boring Super Bowl pregame shows.

It’s Super Bowl Sunday which also means it’s the final round of the rowdiest, drunkest, loudest event in golf. The Waste Management Phoenix Open is held annually during Super Bowl week, and it’s one of those regular season PGA Tour events that doesn’t care about going up against football. This is a tournament with its own unique identity and an incredible reputation. It’s the biggest party in golf and and draws the largest crowds of the entire season, setting a new record on Saturday with more than 200,000 attending the third round.

If you’re one of those people that finds the hours and hours of Super Bowl pregame coverage abhorrent, then the Phoenix Open is a nice alternative before kickoff in Houston. There’s no need to watch talking heads yammer on and on about everything tangentially related to the game. The PGA Tour knows its place, however, and isn’t trying to have one of their better tournaments run into the evening and go head-to-head with the biggest TV event of the year. So the Tour sends the field off split tees and in groups of three over the weekend, as opposed to one long day of twosomes rolling off just the first tee. The result is a tee sheet that covers just a two-hour window and sets us up for a 6 p.m. ET finish on CBS, leaving just a little cushion before kickoff in Houston.

Byeong Hun An holds a one-shot lead heading into the final 18 holes. The young Korean star out of Cal has won some big events early in his career, including the U.S. Am and the BMW PGA, the Euro Tour’s premier tourney. But he is really just starting to put down roots on the stateside PGA Tour and getting a win here at the top of the 2017 season would be an enormous boost for a super talent.

An is up a shot on Martin Laird, a pro who has had some moments on PGA Tour leaderboards over the years but isn’t exactly a superstar. He’s always played well in Phoenix, however, and he’s once again showing he’s a horse for this course. The final round leaderboard, however, isn’t the sexiest, if we’re being honest. This event can handle a meh leaderboard because it’s more about the party and atmosphere. But still, here’s hoping for a Phil Mickelson run on Sunday to add some drama. Laird and An will play with John Peterson in the final group of the day at 12:50 p.m. ET.
