For a broader audience, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am might generate interest as celebrities and pro athletes tee it up on the PGA Tour. But for those who want to watch golf and follow the Tour closely, it’s quite possibly the worst week of the season. There’s minimal golf shown, inane interludes with the celebs, who are often D-listers, and a three-course rotation that limits the ability of the broadcast to really cover all the top players in the field. The cameras are set up at Pebble, where the finale takes place on Sunday afternoon.
How to watch the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro Am live online, TV schedule and more
The PGA Tour returns to the most scenic course on the schedule and one of its worst broadcasts.
So there’s a lot to not love about the Pebble Beach Pro-Am as a televised golf event, even if it may generate some wider interest and is played at one of the country’s most beautiful and historic venues. The weekend broadcast on CBS is when the regular die-hards get their most frustrated, especially on Saturday when the actual PGA Tour title is not yet being decided in the final hours like it is on Sunday. So you’ll get the parade of Larry the Cable Guy and Ray Romano and Kenny G coming through, chopping their way around the golf course and taking up all the air time with Jim Nantz and friends. The corner of golf twitter will lose their minds. It’s an annual tradition.
Before the weekend, Golf Channel and PGA Tour Live will be your primary destinations for coverage. Again, they’re limited in the universe of players they can show. There will be cameras around at the other two venues, Monterey Peninsula Country Club and Spyglass Hill, but it’s not really set up to consistently follow the leaders or stars playing over there. PGA Tour Live will mix in some coverage of Phil Mickelson, Jordan Spieth, and Dustin Johnson playing over on MPCC on Thursday, but those stars are not the focus of the featured groups stream in the first round.
If you’re okay with setting aside the usual routine and seeing less golf and more Aaron Rodgers and far less interesting celebs, then this is a fine event. The Monterey area has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to world class golf venues and this is the one week its broadcast to a large audience each year.
