The screams and shouts to roll back the golf ball continue to grow louder. And there’s certainly merit there, despite what the USGA and R&A will try to tell you. The ball is going farther than ever and making world-class courses obsolete. So yes, something probably needs to be done about the ball and distances that might be a little out of control.
Rory McIlroy launched a 410-yard drive into orbit and right past unsuspecting fans
The PGA Tour and marshals at the WGC Match Play better rope this part of the hole off next time Rory is on the tee.

But can we make an exception for Rory McIlroy? I’d like to watch him send drives into the stratosphere for the rest of time. It is the most thrilling shot in golf. Watching Rory, all diminutive 5’10 holding his Epic driver, fire surface-to-air missiles on the range and out on the course is intoxicating.
At the WGC Dell Match Play at Austin Country Club on Wednesday, Rory hit what was measured as his longest drive ever on the PGA Tour. It went through the fairway, over a crossing cart path that wasn’t supposed to be in play, and past an unsuspecting fan and golf cart.
It’s downhill and with a breeze behind him, but still! The ball is not supposed to go there. The Tour and marshals on the hole better figure out a new strategy for what’s in play the next time Rory or some other bomber gets on the tee.
Soren Kjeldsen, Rory’s opponent in his first match, smashed one 330 yards and was still 78 yards short of young McIlroy. Here’s the AP’s Doug Ferguson trying to capture the separation.
Rory did win the hole with a birdie and the match is All-Square.
