The World Golf Championships can sometimes get anti-climactic. They always showcase loaded fields, but some of the venues have been quite bland over the years and the motivations at a no-cut party are, well, sometimes, lacking. It’s a series that features an international field from the top of the world rankings that provides a big guaranteed check and more free world rankings points.
WGC Mexico 2017 live stream: How to watch Round 4 online
The final round of the WGC Mexico Championship should be one of the best in years.

The first edition of the WGC Mexico Championship, however, has been one of the best WGCs in years. The move to Mexico from historic Doral, one of the longest running stops on the PGA Tour, was controversial, dramatic, and drawn-out in public. This course, Club de Golf Chapultepec, in Mexico City, however, has provided constant entertainment and one of the best watches on the PGA Tour we’ll ever get. The stars are all showing up and doing their thing too, but this change of scenery has been a huge boost for the event, especially for the die-hards who watch the Tour week-to-week. It’s a tree-lined setup, shorter by PGA Tour standards, that demands strong positioning tee-to-green and delivers miracle recovery attempts from the many trees and chutes lining each hole. The altitude also means these bombers are hitting driver regularly over 360 yards and 2-irons 322 yards, as we saw Dustin Johnson open with on Saturday.
It’s just a fantastic change of pace on a Tour full of monotonous TPC venues and the players seem to be embracing it. The crowds are also impressively large and quite loud and enthusiastic, something that was often lacking at laid-back Doral. The venue alone has made this an intriguing event worth watching. But the field, well, it has also delivered in the best possible ways. We have a leaderboard on Sunday that features Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, and Phil Mickelson in the top four. There’s also Jordan Spieth lurking there four shots back after shooting the round of the day, an 8-under 63, on Saturday.
The four in that leading group are all doing it in vintage and thrilling ways too. Phil is missing every fairway, wandering in the woods, hitting shots through trees, and somehow making birdies and pars. His 68 on Saturday was perhaps the peak Phil round in a career with so many contenders.
Thomas is on one of the great heaters to ever open a year, holding a one-shot lead at the 54-hole mark as he goes for his fourth win of the season (and third of 2017). His third round included a hole-in-on off one hop on a 225-yard par-3.
And then there’s DJ and Rory, launching 350-yard drives in the altitude, holing out eagles, and battling for the No. 1 ranking. McIlroy stole the show on Friday, shooting to a multi-shot lead in his first start on the PGA Tour this season. We thought there might be a little rust or hold-back for Rory in his first start since suffering a rib fracture in January, but he’s let it rip and it’s been beautiful to watch again on Tour.
So we’re all set up. Even the most die-hard cynics were caught up in the pace and excitement on Saturday. We’ve been on an incredible run of winners on Tour this year and Sunday could be the best finish yet.
