The Valero Texas Open, if we’re being honest, is not the biggest event on the PGA Tour. It falls in a bit of a post-Masters dead zone and the Tour didn’t do it any favors this year when it announced the Zurich Classic in New Orleans next week would be a two-man team event. That rare format change generated a ton of buzz for the Zurich, and some new big name commitments to the field. But it hurt this week’s Texas Open, which was already one of the lower tier events on the rota.
Valero Texas Open 2017 purse: Winner’s payout is $1.1 million in prize money
Even the Texas Open boasts a hefty purse, a sign of how far things have come on the PGA Tour in prize money distribution.

Despite its status, the purse is still quite competitive at the Texas Open. It hits that threshold of having at least a $6 million purse, which almost every single tournament on the PGA Tour has these days (the Bob Hope, John Deere, and Wyndham are the ones under $6 million on the circuit). The Valero boasts a $6.2 million purse this year, which means the winner will get a nice $1.116 million payday. Phil Mickelson marveled on a recent edition of Feherty about how they play for at least $1 million every week on Tour, compared to when he started and $1 million was a good sized purse for the entire field. Phil credited Tiger Woods for the enormous boost that all these purses received over the last couple decades. That this is the kind of cash available at the Texas Open is the latest reminder of how far things have come.
Kevin Chappell has led throughout the final round at TPC San Antonio. Chappell has been in contention several times in recent years, but failed to clinch his first PGA Tour title. But even without a win, Chappell is not exactly hurting for cash. He’s made big money with several close calls and currently counts $12,043,404 in career earnings. So this finish in San Antonio is less about the $1 million check and more about finally getting on the board with that win.
