2017 Masters leaderboard: Justin Rose joins 5-man tie for 1st place

It’s been a tight leaderboard on the Masters’ first day.

The Masters began at 8 a.m. ET Thursday morning, and the day’s been characterized by choppy weather and lots of parity at the top of the leaderboard. Around 2 p.m. ET, there was a five-player tie atop the field, just as some of the day’s final groups were teeing off.

Belgian Thomas Pieters opened up a three-stroke lead early in his back nine, at one point reaching a score of 5-under par. But Pieters stumbled at Amen Corner, bogeying the 11th and double-bogeying the 12th hole. His tee shot on No. 12 found Rae’s Creek, the same body of water that doomed Jordan Spieth’s round on Sunday last year.

Pieters’ stumble paved the way for the competition to join him at the top. Kevin Chappell, Andy Sullivan, Matthew Fitzpatrick, and Justin Rose all tied him for first place. Russell Henley teed off in the day’s first group and finished 1-under, leaving himself in solid contention heading into Friday.

Spieth was at even par through 11 holes. He had one bogey and one birdie on the front nine and otherwise had an entirely undramatic start to his tournament. Spieth has a green jacket from 2015 and hasn’t finished worse than second in three starts at Augusta. He’s gotten off to a steady start in his fourth go-around there.

Here’s the leaderboard as of 2 p.m. ET on Thursday. You can follow a live, instantly refreshing board at the official Masters website.
