2017 Masters: Payout, purse up for grabs in Sunday’s final round

How much cash is on the line for the Masters winner?

Winning the Masters comes with all kinds of prestige and puts you in the golf history books. But it’s also a heck of a payday.

Danny Willett’s 2016 chunk of change showed just how big a deal this kind of money can be for a golfer who isn’t winning majors on American soil all the time:

For Willett the victory is career-changing. Heralded as one of the up-and-coming players in England, Willett is now a major champion. The victory is his first in the United States and the $1.8 million payout is nearly three times the $677,265 he’d previously earned playing in America. Willett has had much more success on the European Tour, with nearly $12 million in career earnings. Even with a successful career, the prize at Augusta is by far the biggest of his career. The winning share from the Masters is actually more than Willett has made in all but one season since he turned pro in 2008.

Recently, there’s been an escalation of payouts at Majors and other big tournaments. The USGA announced in February that the U.S. Open purse would be jumping to a whopping $12 million this year. For a time, The Players Championship was the largest pot in golf at over $10 million. The four Majors had a total purse of $10 million, and WGC events are also in that ballpark.

This year, the winner of the Masters will take home $1.98 million, with $1.188 million for second place and $748,000 as part of the $11 million total purse.

Willett’s payout in 2016 was the second year of a $1.8 million winner’s share. When the payout was less in 2014, the winner took home $1.44 million.
