2017 Masters leaderboard: Thomas Pieters pushing toward the top

The young Belgian is making a late Sunday charge.

They’re racing toward the finish at the Masters. The entire field is at least on the back nine on Sunday at Augusta National with the green jacket on the line.

Thomas Pieters, who led the tournament briefly on Thursday, has made a back-nine charge to put himself into contention.

The Belgian 25-year-old made four birdies in a row from the 12th to 15th holes, going from 2-under for the championship to 6-under. He vaulted into a tie with Sergio Garcia, two shots back of leader Justin Rose, before a 16th-hole bogey knocked him back a stroke.

Pieters is making himself a household name this weekend, which is surprising even though it shouldn’t be. We’ll see him on this stage for a long time to come. The Masters has been a national breakthrough for him.

Matt Kuchar moved to 5-under by making a hole-in-one on Augusta National Golf Club’s par-3 16th hole. It was one of the best moments of the tournament and came at a critical time. Nobody else in the field is better than 4-under. Jordan Spieth and Rickie Fowler teed off second-to-last before Rose and Garcia, but neither has been able to make a Sunday charge.
