Masters 2017: Sergio Garcia misses short birdie putt on 18th hole, setting up playoff with Justin Rose

Golf’s tradition unlike any other went to a playoff. Here are the rules for such a playoff. (It’s sudden-death.)

The Masters has given us golf’s most dramatic scene in some time on Sunday. Veterans Sergio Garcia and Justin Rose dueled until the 18th hole at Augusta National Golf Club, where they finished in a tie to set up a playoff.

Garcia and Rose both hit solid drives to the left side of the fairway, with Garcia’s settling a few yards ahead of Rose’s. Both hit brilliant second shots, setting up a pair of birdie opportunities with nothing less than the green jacket on the line. Both golfers missed their putts, with Garcia’s coming from a few feet closer.

The two were tied for first place at the beginning of the round and at various points after it started. Both were 6-under through 54 holes, and both took their turns ahead. Rose led early in the back nine, and Garcia tied him with a thrilling eagle on Augusta National Golf Club’s 15th hole. This was a sprint to the finish in the truest sense.

Rose entered with one major championship to his name, the 2013 U.S. Open. Garcia was lugging the sport’s most famous major championship drought, having been an elite player for most of this generation without closing the deal.
