Justin Rose displayed tremendous sportsmanship in giving Sergio Garcia the stage at Augusta

Garcia winning a major is cool. So is Rose for being a good sport.

Sergio Garcia’s career-long major championship dry spell is over. He beat Justin Rose in a tantalizing playoff at the Masters on Sunday, finally closing the deal on a major Sunday after years and years of close calls but narrow misses.

One of the coolest moments of the championship came just before Garcia sealed the green jacket by putting out. Rose had a poor tee shot and second shot on the first playoff hole, and Garcia stuck his second shot inside of Rose’s third shot. Because it’s a sudden-death playoff, Garcia was clearly in the driver’s seat.

Rose must’ve known that, because he did a really cool thing. Garcia was the sport’s poster boy for major championship futility, not having won one in more than a decade at the top of the sport. So Rose decided to let Garcia walk ahead of him to the green, taking in the adulation of Augusta National’s patrons all to himself.

Watch Rose, gamely hanging behind as Garcia soaks up the scene:

Golf has many ways of sucking people into its romance. Rose letting Garcia walk to the green himself before the biggest moment of his career is one of those ways.

Congratulations to Garcia on his first major title, and thanks to Rose for making a cool moment just a little bit cooler.
