2017 Players Championship: Payout, purse up for grabs in Sunday’s final round

The PGA Tour’s marquee event has long been known for having one of the biggest purses in the game, and this year’s payout is another outrageous amount.

The Players Championship offers one of the highest purses in golf, and the winner on Sunday at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. could take home a cool $1.89 million in prize money.

Often referred to as golf’s unofficial fifth major, The Players Championship has a purse of $10.5 million at stake, on par with the grand slam events. These are the same stakes as in 2016, when Jason Day won by four strokes and took home $1.89 million, 18% of the total purse.

For comparison, the total purse for the Masters this year was $11 million, with winner Sergio Garcia taking home $1.98 million for his victory.

Here is the breakdown of the total purse for the top 10 finishers at The Players Championship, assuming no ties:

  • 1st place: $1.89 million
  • 2nd place: $1.134 million
  • 3rd place: $714,000
  • 4th place: $504,000
  • 5th place: $420,000
  • 6th place: $378,000
  • 7th place: $351,750
  • 8th place: $325,500
  • 9th place: $304,500
  • 10th place: $283,500

If there are ties, the players split evenly their respective positions. For instance, if two players tie for fourth place, they split the total of fourth ($504,000) and fifth place ($420,000), for $462,000 each.

NBC will televise the final round of the Players Championship beginning at 2 p.m. ET, with online streaming available through NBC Sports.
