Players Championship odds 2017: You can now bet on water balls at TPC Sawgrass’ iconic 17th hole

The par-3 17th may be the shortest at TPC Sawgrass, but it’s also one of the most recognizable and treacherous holes on the PGA Tour. So, naturally, you may place bets on how many balls will splash down and which big names will add to the mayhem at this week’s Players Championship.

With Rory McIlroy returning to competition this week from his wedding and honeymoon and Dustin Johnson having shaken off the rust of his injury-related hiatus, golf fans may want to put some cash on either one of those superstars winning this week’s Players Championship.

Sure, DJ (+700 at Bovada.lv — bet $100 to win $700) and Rory (+1100) may be favored bets, but the bookies would like to help you get more creative with your gambling greenbacks by opening several prop bets that involve the 137-yard peninsula green.

Here are just some of the 17th hole-related prop bets you may place on the spot that’s become a fan favorite over the years:

  • Number of tee shots in the water on 17: Over/Under 38.5
  • Total number of balls in the water in the final round: Over/Under 6.5
  • Number of birdies eventual winner will record on 17: Over/Under 1
  • Will someone score an ace on the 17th? Yes +350/No -500 (bet $500 to win $100)
  • Will DJ hit a tee shot into the water on 17? Yes +400/No -600
  • Will a McIlroy tee shot end up in the drink on 17? Yes +550/No -1000
  • Will Phil Mickelson find the water off the tee on 17? Yes +400/No -600

The Players Championship is one of the most fun events in the game. It’s not a major, but it’s the biggest event on the PGA Tour, with the strongest field, and one of the richest purses. The 17th hole is part of what makes this tradition what it is, and bringing gambling into the mix will only enhance it.

The 17th-hole splashdown count begins Thursday at TPC Sawgrass.
