St. Jude Classic 2017 purse: Winner’s payout is $1.2 million in prize money

The St. Jude Classic is another example of the money boom the PGA Tour has experienced thanks to Tiger Woods.

The FedEx St. Jude Classic may not be the most prestigious event on the PGA Tour schedule, but a one-million-plus payout to the winner is still good work if you can find it. The annual stop in Memphis occupies a tough spot on a crowded PGA Tour schedule, coming one week before the U.S. Open, maybe the most exhausting test in golf. It draws some big names who want to roll into a major fresh off some competitive reps, but it’s a fairly thin field overall.

The money, however, is on par (golf term) with your regular PGA Tour event. It’s custom now to have a purse over $6 million and a winner’s payout well north of $1 million. The total purse at the St. Jude is $6,400,000 and the winner will get $1,152,000. It’s a purse that’s right about average for the modern day schedule and maybe not a number commensurate with what could be considered one of the lower-tier events on Tour.

Next week’s U.S. Open, however, will be a whole different ballgame, paying out $12 million at Erin Hills. That’s the biggest purse ever, with the USGA making the latest move this offseason in the never-ending arms race between the majors and The Players to have the richest event in the game.

In Memphis, we have a clustered leaderboard, with nine players tied for the lead at one point late on Sunday. There were 18 within three shots of the leading number too. On a course that’s been toughened up, don’t expect a ton of birdies and movement coming down the stretch. That means a lot of the money for second and third and fourth places may be split a whole bunch of ways.

Here’s the full payout table for this Sunday in Memphis (obviously these totals will be impacted by ties and we’ll update when results go final):
