U.S. Open players are already mad about the stupid long rough at Erin Hills

HOLLERIN’ AT THE USGA SEASON is very much back and we’re started with a Kevin Na rant live from the scene.

For a quiet part of the sports calendar, mid-June comes through pretty well. You’ve got the NBA Finals, Stanley Cup Final, and French Open finishing up, and perhaps golf’s favorite sport — yelling at the danged USGA about course setup. It’s U.S. Open week baby.

When the 117th edition of American golf’s national championship gets underway, there’s a hellacious, unique test awaiting the players. Just 11 years old, the relatively young Erin Hills golf course just outside Milwaukee has been billed for sometime as almost being constructed solely for the purpose of hosting a U.S. Open. The USGA’s had a uniquely close relationship to changes and modifications around the track and it’s been closed completely since October 2016 to prep for this week.

That means plenty of time to grow up the fescue and roughage alongside the 7,800-yard setup that should provide for one of the lengthiest U.S. Opens ever. And that means, well, just let Kevin Na demonstrate.

He’s not the first to note this, either. Here’s Wesley Bryan a couple weeks back when previewing the course.

It’s not even Monday yet. Strap in for a long week from Wisconsin, y’all — and stay tuned for the press conference. We’ll have fireworks, no doubt.
