With temperatures expected to cool and winds expected to rise, scores may rise right along with it as good friends and top Americans Rickie Fowler and Justin Thomas will get top billing as they try to chase down Brian Harman for their first major championship at Erin Hills. But there’s a host of other well known names in contention, too. Ryder Cup stars Brooks Kopeka (-11) and Patrick Reed (-8) will be in the mix, while English ball-striking sensation Tommy Fleetwood and 21-year-old Players Champion Si Woo Kim add more quality at the top. Trust us: We’re in for a fun afternoon out on the Kettle Moraine.
Of course, Thomas was the story of Saturday’s third round, vaulting himself into contention with a historic, 9-under-par 63 that displaced Johnny Miller from the top of the U.S. Open’s single-round scoring record. (I walked every hole with Thomas on Saturday, it was fun, more on that here.) Thomas got the headlines and the attention, but it was Harman taking control as the afternoon wore on — posting a more-than-solid 67 of his own to lead by one. Rickie Fowler will start two behind at 10-under-par, in the third group to the last.
The leaders will hit the first tee box starting at around 3pm ET.
