2017 American Century Championship: Tee times, pairings for Sunday’s final round

Steph Curry, Justin Timberlake, and Tony Romo will be the headliners again on Sunday in Lake Tahoe. But at the top of the board, we may be in the midst of a dynasty.

The Yankees. The 49ers. UCLA basketball. Alabama football. The Celtics, Lakers, and Bulls. Mark Mulder and celebrity golf.

What constitutes a dynasty never follows a rigid definition, but we may be in the middle of one at the American Century Championship. Mulder heads to Sunday’s final round at Edgewood Tahoe in the lead again, looking for his third straight American Century Championship title. In between, he’s mixed in a Diamond Resorts celebrity pro-am title too in Orlando. We’ve not seen sustained dominance like this in a long time — Stephen Curry could maybe take notes if he plans on taking his Warriors superteam to comparable heights.

Mulder is three points ahead of Mardy Fish and Derek Lowe, some of the other aces that populate these celebrity golf events and are scratch or near-scratch players. This annual event in Tahoe, however, is the deepest and most prestigious of them all and winning it three times in a row, no joke, would be an amazing run. A three-point lead is a little different than a three-stroke lead in this stableford scoring system they put in play here. A three-stroke lead would be a much more comfortable position, but with stableford, that margin is much more tenuous and can be closed in a hole.

Mulder, Fish, and Lowe will play in the final group on Sunday, teeing off at 9:50 a.m. PT in Tahoe. They don’t necessarily organize them by score at this event, opting often to put the biggest stars together or celebrities they know will be comfortable with one another. But there’s a general effort to keep the players clustered according to where they are on the leaderboard, especially when it comes to the very top. They want the contenders all playing alongside one another as it comes down to the wire on NBC Sunday afternoon.

NBC will be live at 3 p.m. ET and plans to be on air until the conclusion of the event right around 6 p.m. ET. There should be no issue finishing on time with the weather perfect and more than five hours allotted for that final threesome. The most power-packed group is once again the trio of Steph Curry, Justin Timberlake, and Tony Romo. They played together on Saturday and the crowds swelled. All three are also able to play scratch golf but aren’t really close to the top of the board this week. Still, expect to see lots of this group on NBC in what is not the most serious competition.
