The Open Championship wraps up on Sunday. Jordan Spieth enters the final round with a three-shot lead at 11-under for the tournament, and he’ll look to hold off Matt Kuchar and the rest of the field at Royal Birkdale in The Open’s 146th playing.

It’s Jordan Spieth’s championship to lose

Spieth’s already done so much in his young career that it’s easy to take him for granted. He hasn’t won a major in a shade more than two years, and that somehow feels like a long, surprising drought. If he can hold a three-shot advantage on Sunday, though, he’ll have three major wins and three legs of the career grand slam locked down heading into the PGA Championship. Spieth turns 24 this week.

Spieth and Kuchar are the final group for the second day in a row, and they’re both well clear of each other and of the rest of the field. A three-shot edge entering Sunday is no small thing, even though it could evaporate quickly.

The players tied for third, Austin Connelly and Brooks Koepka, enter the day six shots off Spieth’s pace. It’s a lot to overcome, and for anyone other than Kuchar to upset Spieth will require the young Texan to have a really miserable day.

On Saturday, Spieth carded his second 65 of the tournament. A third would clinch the Claret Jug, because nobody — not even Branden Grace! — is going to shoot 59. Realistically, Spieth can’t lose if he shoots a 2-under 68 or better. Even a 69 or even-par 70 would leave Spieth with a fair shot to come out atop the leaderboard.

In the unlikely event of a tie, The Open would be settled on a four-hole aggregate playoff, which morphs into sudden-death if the players are still knotted. That’d be one of the most dramatic sporting events of the year. But unless Spieth falls into deep trouble at Birkdale, that discussion will be moot.
