Quail Hollow range is no match for Rory McIlroy’s 365-yard drive

After slamming his 3-wood more than 300 yards, McIlroy carried a drive 365 yards on the puny Quail Hollow practice range.

Rory McIlroy, even casual golf fans know, hits a long ball. So long, in fact, that when he broke out his driver during a Wednesday practice session for the PGA Championship he proceeded to break through the virtual barrier separating the Quail Hollow driving range from the rest of the world — which of course went berserk after Golf Channel cameras captured the two-time PGA champ blasting shots into the stratosphere.

It wasn’t just the big dog, which put some balls beyond the tree line at the back of the range, that held golf watchers in thrall. In addition to smacking a drive 365 yards and out of the park, McIlroy carried his 3-wood some 330 yards.

Here’s an appetizer of what may be to come when McIlroy gets down to business off the first tee at 1:35 p.m. ET with Rickie Fowler and Jon Rahm:

Fans of the winner of four major titles should not have been all that stunned by McIlroy’s prowess off the tee. After all, this little factoid pretty much sums up the brute strength the Ulsterman mustered during last week’s WGC-Bridgestone Invitational:
