Angry Sergio Garcia breaks his putter, has to use woods and irons on the greens

Sergio Garcia was puttering around somewhere in the middle of the pack in Sunday’s third round of the Dell Technologies Championship when he left a 35-foot eagle putt from the fringe at the par-4 fourth hole short and took out his ire on his balky flat stick.

The problem for the reigning Masters champion was that after he smacked the putter into the ground and broke it, he had to take it out of play and get creative with a club not yet disfigured in a fit of pique. It appeared to be no harm, no foul for Sergio, who promptly drilled a 13-footer for a birdie with his 3-wood.

The magic wore off, though, as Garcia went on to make bogeys on four of the next five holes — a run that included a missed gimme amid a three-jack on the par-4 ninth hole — and descend from red numbers down to 3-over.

He did get a couple back on his incoming nine, like birdie putts with a long iron on the par-4 13th and par-3 17th.

But the damage was done both to his putter and scorecard and now he’s well out of it with 18 more holes to go on Monday in Boston. The good news is the on-site equipment folks will have him set up with a new putter for that round so it won’t be as dire.
