One analyst thinks Dustin Johnson’s monster drive at Kapalua is the ‘greatest shot’ in golf history

The world No. 1’s near ace on a 433-yard par-4 was outrageous. But the best shot ever? That seems a bit much.

Dustin Johnson is pretty good at golf, and if you have been untethered from your computing devices for the past few days and need convincing, his near hole-in-one on the 433-yard par-4 12th hole Sunday at the Sentry Tournament of Champions ought to do the trick.

Did we mention that the world No. 1, who ran away from the field with an eight-shot laugher at the Tournament of Champions, almost holed his tee shot from 433 yards away? With a driver?

DJ’s incredible feat during Sunday’s finale of the tour’s 2018 curtain-raiser was the talk of the tourney, with Brandel Chamblee going absolutely bonkers and calling it “the greatest shot ever hit in the game.”

That, after the outspoken NBC/Golf Channel analyst took heat on Twitter for ranking Johnson’s bomb No. 1 among his “10 favorite shots ever hit on the PGA Tour.”

Well, the PGA Tour’s Twitter account on Monday posted a video of a number of near-hits that other players — from the legendary Nick Taylor to two-time major champion Zach Johnson — have enjoyed over the past several years.

As for the author of Chamblee’s greatest hit, the 17-time tour winner was not nearly so impressed with his prowess, joking as he walked to the green that he “hit it a little thin” and “came up a little short.”

Yes, he did, by an entire six inches. So, um, better luck next time, DJ.
