Justin Thomas started the weekend at the WGC Mexico Championship 11 shots off the lead. In a loaded, limited field, you can make some quick jumps up the leaderboard but that’s a big gap and there’s just so much talent between you and the leader.

JT may win for the second time in two weeks thanks to an outrageous weekend that finished with one of the great shots in WGC history.
Thomas, however, finished Sunday afternoon with a two shot lead thanks to a ridiculous 62-64 36-hole run on the weekend. It ended with one of the best shots in WGC history, a walk-off eagle to get to 16-under.
There are no cuts at these WGCs so everyone plays the weekend, usually playing out the string with some middling numbers or maybe posting a low one that doesn’t matter with no real pressure.
But we’ve seen JT over the past year go on some legendary hot streaks and now he’s in line to win for the second time in two weeks. The Honda Classic win last week was his seventh W in his last 31 starts and pushed him to No. 3 in the world. His first career WGC title coming a week later, following last-year’s 5-win PoY campaign, would turn the JT hype all the way up heading into the Masters.
Because Thomas started the weekend so far back, he had an earlier tee time today even after his Saturday 62. So now he’ll wait about an hour as the last tee times come into the clubhouse in Mexico City. Rafa Cabrera Bello, Phil Mickelson, and Tyrrell Hatton are all two shots back at 14-under right now. Mickelson and Hatton are in the final group with four more holes to play and are probably the biggest threat to jumping up and catching Thomas to force a playoff.
