Thomas Pieters broke a golf club over his dang neck like a Belgian Lou Ferrigno

Thomas Pieters hit a bad shot at the BMW PGA Championship Friday. He made sure the offending club behind the mistake would never hurt him again.

Pieters, a 6’5 golfer from Belgium, took out the rage of a botched approach out on one of his irons, eschewing the classic Bo Jackson “snap it over my knee” technique in favor of breaking it WITH HIS DANG NECK.

The shot wasn’t even that bad, but Pieters’ reaction gave us two incredible moments on the course this afternoon. First, of course, was the visceral temper of a man so angry at his equipment he thought the best weapon for punishing it was the most vulnerable part of his spine. The second was Sky Sports’ tremendously British announcer, who covered the snapping with the world’s most earnest “Oh, deary me!”

Another important takeaway from Pieters’ miss — he’s clearly a fan of classic sports. Or sport-adjacent activities.

The BMW PGA Championship is one of the biggest events on golf’s European Tour. So it makes sense tensions would be high on Friday with the tournament’s cut approaching. Pieters is +3 for the tournament through 32 holes and trails leader Rory McIlroy by 15 strokes. That’ll be an uphill climb to make this weekend’s cut, and now he’s got to do it without a five-iron.
