Tee times and everything else you need to know about the 1st round of the U.S. Open

The national championship begins at Shinnecock Hills.

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

The 2018 U.S. Open starts Thursday at Shinnecock Hills in the Hamptons. Tee times range from 6:45 a.m. ET to 2:42 p.m., and golf will happen over a span of about 12 hours and change.

The television broadcast starts at 9:30 a.m. ET on FS1 and moves to FOX at 4:30 p.m., with streaming all the while on Fox Sports GO and usopen.com. Joe Buck leads the network’s coverage of the national championship, with Curtis Strange, Paul Azinger, Joel Klatt, and a cast of others chipping in throughout the weekend. Before the TV broadcast goes live at 9:30, your best bet is to stream the event on the championship website.

The field for the U.S. Open is 156 players. To make sure players keep moving about the course and the day doesn’t take more than the 12-plus hours it already does, the USGA has half of them tee off No. 1 and half tee off No. 10 on Thursday and Friday. The split tees are a good way to manage crowds at Shinnecock Hills and prevent bottlenecking early on.

If there’s one headlining group in the field, it’s the one that tees off No. 1 at 1:47 p.m. ET. That one features Tiger Woods, world No. 1 Dustin Johnson, and PGA champion Justin Thomas. All are serious threats to win at Shinnecock, with Johnson the betting favorite at 10/1. Other blockbuster groups include Bubba Watson, Jason Day, and Brooks Koepka off No. 1 at 7:40 a.m. and Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, and Phil Mickelson off No. 10 at 8:02 a.m.
