The leaderboard is a mess. Who will survive?

The final round of the 118th U.S. Open is underway at Shinnecock Hills. Four players started the day tied for the lead at four strokes over par for the tournament: Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Tony Finau, and Daniel Berger. The day promises to have tons of drama. You can watch all the action on FOX or FOX Sports GO.

Shinnecock Hills has played brutally for the first three days of the tournament, and it was especially so in the afternoon on Saturday. That prompted a mea culpa from USGA CEO Mike Davis, who said groundskeepers would put water on the course to slow it down.

“We felt that it would work well given the forecast we had, but I think that, now that I’m sitting here, we would say that parts of this test of golf simply were too tough. We want the U.S. Open to be tough, but we saw some examples late in the day where well executed shots were not only not being rewarded, but in some cases penalized,” Davis said.

Maybe the course will be easier on Sunday. Maybe there will be more carnage. We’ll have live updates in this space as the round starts to move along.

Updates on Sunday

All times are Eastern:

4:00pm:

Wild scenes at Shinnecock Hills, where Tommy Fleetwood’s posted 63 to roar from way off the lead to safely in the clubhouse at 2-over for the championship. With Shinny playing nearly a shot and a half easier than yestrday, it’s a bit hard to imagine that number holding up — but right now only one player’s clear of him. That’s Brooks Koepka at 1-over par, with just one stroke of cushion. Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed are level with Fleetwood’s 2-over score with about 9 holes to the finish.

It seems we’ve got a four horse race to the trophy over the final nine.

2:36 pm:

Wheeeew, buddy. We’ve had a PGA Championship break out at Shinnecock. After last night’s tongue lashing from players and media about the set-up, Shinny’s playing much much easier than Saturday and we’ve already seen a pair of lead changes. Masters champ Patrick Reed raced up to tie the quad of players at 3-over with three straight birdies to open his day, before Brooks Koepka made an early birdie at the 2nd to pull in solo first at 2-over. We’ll see how long that holds: None of the overnight leaders have really blinked just yet, and Reed’s got another putt for birdie on the 4th coming up.

1:54 p.m.

The course is playing much, much more easily on Sunday than it did on Saturday. Twelve players are under par so far, after just three finished below par yesterday.

The biggest mover so far is Tommy Fleetwood. He started at 9 over but was 4 under through his first eight holes Sunday, moving to 5 under for the week and just two shots off the four co-leaders, who hadn’t yet teed of.
