Memorial Tournament 2018: Tee times, pairings for Tiger Woods and field for Round 4

It would not be an authentic Memorial tournament unless the weather somehow impacted the schedule in a significant way. The 2018 edition at Muirfield Village had mostly dodged what looked like an awful forecast at the start of the week. There was a 90-minute rain delay on Friday afternoon but aside from that, everything has stayed on schedule and there’s not been much rain during playing hours (overnight is a different story).

We ran out of luck on Sunday and the PGA Tour was not going to take any chances. The forecast is not pretty and the Tour made the proactive move to put the remaining field in threesomes and use split tees for the final round. This condenses the entire field down into a two-hour window and is a common practice for avoiding weather disruptions that could push a conclusion back a day. The Tour will start them at 7:30 a.m. ET on this Sunday, racing against the weather and trying to finish around 2 p.m. or so.

It’s not ideal for the Tour, the tournament, or the TV partner. Everyone would prefer the usual showcase finish around 6 p.m. or so but it’s a sensible choice to move things up to first thing in the morning. The fact that there is U.S. Open sectional qualifying on Monday morning probably doesn’t help either, with many players in this field needing to go through that 36-hole sectional. A Sunday finish — no matter what time of day that comes — is critical at Jack Nicklaus’ event.

This all means that Tiger Woods has an early Sunday tee time when, in fact, he’s played well enough over the last two days to have a traditional late Sunday slot. Woods will tee off alongside Whee Kim and J.B. Holmes at 9:10 a.m. ET off No. 1 tee. That’s just two spots ahead of the Sunday final pairing. Tiger is five shots off the pace after sputtering to the finish on Saturday evening with two bogeys in his final three holes. He held the lead at one point, but the players behind him still had so many holes and it was Bryson DeChambeau that pushed the pace with a bogey-free 66. DeChambeau is 14-under and one shot clear of Patrick Cantlay, Kyle Stanley, and young stud Joaquin Niemann.

Tiger is certainly capable of erasing the five-shot cushion. He’ll need more help from just DeChambeau, however, as there’s loads of talent all around the top 10. Golf Channel will have live coverage on TV and on their streaming service at 8:30 a.m. ET. CBS will then take over and stream the finish on their website and through their app, as well as on PGA Tour Live. Unlike Golf Channel, CBS will not have the finish live on TV, but just on those streaming services.
