What has become a sleepy, lower-level PGA Tour stop is about to get a major boost this weekend in the DC area. That’s because Tiger Woods is back and in contention at his own little party, now known as (but not for long!) the Quicken Loans National.

Tiger is tied for 11th place at the midpoint of this year’s Quicken Loans National, which will be the final QL National. Woods made a big move up the leaderboard on Friday morning with a 5-under 65. The round featured a hole-out chip shot from 100 feet, multiple birdie putts outside 10 feet, and all-around solid ballstriking. The new mallet putter is working, for now, and Tiger has a chance to win for the first time in five years.

Woods will begin the weekend just four shots off the lead, held by the trio of Ryan Armour, Beau Hossler, and Brian Gay. The course, which was one of the toughest on the entire PGA Tour last year, should play firm and fast all weekend, making those mid-60s rounds harder to come by. The chasers usually want easier conditions but Woods is only four back and often prefers to play the field in the tougher conditions on a tougher course. We’ll see if that preference still holds this weekend.

Tiger tees off on Saturday at 12:25 p.m. ET. Most of his third round will fall within the TV window, which goes live at 1 p.m. But if you want to watch his first couple holes, you can bounce over to Facebook Watch, which is where the PGA Tour is now housing early weekend coverage of featured groups. They will have Tiger there from the very first tee shot in what is going to be an arduous, sweaty day in the DC area.
