Tiger’s in contention after a day at The Open. Here’s how to watch his Friday.

It’s going to be a wet one to start Tiger’s round on Friday, but we might get into the clear for the back nine. Let’s talk about how he’ll need to position himself for the weekend.

If we’re grading Tiger Woods’ first appearance at The Open since 2015, give it a solid enough B. A fine enough grade, not quite the top-of-the-class — but squarely in position where damage can be done on the weekend. Now we’ll just hope he can find a decent pillow for the rest of his stay in Scotland.

After KT tape was the story of the morning, Cat turned in an even-par round on Thursday afternoon to put himself right in the thick of things heading to the next day in a championship. That’s good for T-32 at the moment, but it’s not really reflective of the quality of Woods’ round in the early goings. A couple of early birdies had Tiger to 2-under-par, and chances were abound to keep adding red numbers to the card. Still, the trend of the past couple months bucked its head — Woods booted a pair of 5-footers down the stretch to surrender his under-par score.

But, still, after a day, Tiger’s squarely in it. That’s the goal of any opening round at any golf tournament: don’t play yourself out of it in one day. Some guys, of course, did that. Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia, Brooks Koepka, and Patrick Reed are all in holes that might be too deep to recover from — and each will have a difficult path just to play the weekend here at Carnoustie. Even par is a fine, fine round of golf at The Open’s toughest rota track. It’s even more so considering the fire-hardened, dried-out conditions that’s turning fairways into freeways.

Rain should be a major factor during Friday’s round. The area’s expected to clear out after midday, but with a 10:20am local time start it still stands to reason that the Cat’s going to play a few holes in the rain
