The 147th Open Championship wraps up Saturday, and it shapes up like a doozy. Jordan Spieth began the day in a tie atop the leaderboard with Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner at 9 under. Tiger Woods started only four shots back of that trio, tied for sixth.
A streaming guide for Sunday at The Open, an amazing golf day
Jordan Spieth’s the favorite. Tiger Woods is in contention. It’s going to be a day at Carnoustie.
Woods has a plausible shot to win his first major since 2008 and 15th ever. He’ll need another brilliant day, if not an improvement upon his 5-under 66 on Saturday. Spieth, the defending champion, is the favorite after carding his own 65 on moving day.
If Woods plays well, Sunday will bring the kind of drama the sport hasn’t had in years, or really ever. We’ve never gotten to see how Spieth and the other stars of this moment will deal with Woods, wearing Sunday red and at the top of his game, trying to chase them down on the final day of a major. In his heyday, Woods cooking on a Sunday was a terrifying prospect for everyone else in contention. He could create the same feeling now.
It’s not just a two-man story, hard as it’s going to be not to focus on Spieth and Woods. Multiple-major winners Rory McIlroy and Zach Johnson are among the six players who woke up tied with Woods, four back of the leaders. So is Matt Kuchar, who’s come close to a couple of major wins, most notably when he finished second to Spieth at Royal Birkdale last year. Justin Rose started just a shot behind them, and so did Adam Scott, because this throwback weekend at The Open extends beyond Woods.
Whoever wins the championship takes home $1.89 million of a $10.5 million purse. The Open is one of the sport’s most lucrative tournaments as well as one of its most prestigious, but it still pays out a little less at the top than the U.S. Open. Brooks Koepka got $2.16 million out of a $12 million total payout when he won in June at Shinnecock Hills.
