The Ryder Cup gets back underway early Saturday morning in Paris, and if you’re waking up early in the States — chances are you’ll be hoping for the red, white, and blue to right the ship after a disasterous Friday afternoon foursomes session.

Europe swept the alternate shot format, which is impressive alone — but how they did it should create more concern for American fans. No match even reached the 16th hole, an absolutely dominating performance that gave the Euros and Thomas Björn a 5-3 lead heading to the second day of the competition.

One of the worst performances of the afternoon came from Phil Mickelson, who’s allegedly two-way miss sets up poorly for the treacherous alternate shot format. Alongside Bryson Dechambeau, the two trailed Sergio Garcia and Alex Noren by SEVEN through nine holes. Despite a late rally, it was all she wrote.

Tbis shouldn’t surprise anyone. America doesn’t win Ryder Cups in Europe basically ever, and the assumption they’d run roughshod over this European team was always hilariously off-base. Team USA is great, deep, and talented. This is also one of the best Euro teams ever, too.

The early dyanamic duo from The now-leading Euros have the pairing of Tommy Fleetwood and Frank Molinari, two of the game’s best ballstrikers who suit well to Le Golf National’s creative demands off the tee. They’re 2-0, and they’ll head back to the course Saturday morning early with the perhaps hallmark US pairing — Patrick Reed and that Tiger Woods guy.

A couple other pairings of note include Sergio matching up with Rory in a battle with two American bombers in Brooks Koepka and Tony Finau. Poulter & Rahm versus Spieth & Thomas in the late window should provide fireworks, too.
