Phil Mickelson piles on PGA Tour VP’s retweet calling for Jay Monahan resignation

Phil Mickelson is at it again on Twitter; this time, Alan Shipnuck is not the target.

Unsurprisingly, it’s the other thing that the 45-time PGA Tour winner loves to discuss on the bird app — the June 6 deal and PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan breaking trust with his players.

The six-time major champion added fuel to the fire on a social media rumor surrounding a potential resignation from Monahan.

On Tuesday night, Twitter user Bob “Golf” Ball (@BobBallPdx), a real estate developer from Oregon, posted a long thread referencing PGA Tour Senior VP of Communications Joel Schuchmann calling for Commissioner Jay Monahan’s job.

He started the thread with, “Jay Monahan is out as Commissioner of the PGA Tour.”

This sentence must have piqued Mickelson’s interest as he quote-tweeted the user.

“Well said. In addition to strong-arming LIV players, losing trust with his players, and all credibility with his staff, golf is in this situation entirely because of him,” Mickelson wrote. “There’s no unity or path forward with him involved, in my opinion as well.”

In a second tweet, continuing the thread, he included the screen grab of Schuchmann’s now-deleted repost. Of course, Ball had the evidence to prove the repost did exist at some point.

“Reports say communication in the organization is dysfunctional,” he wrote. “...Of course, he [Schuchmann] abruptly took the repost down. Maybe it was a Freudian slip, but he was showing the feelings of many (if not most) employees at the PGA Tour.”

Maybe Ball is ahead of the curve, but right now, this thread is him giving his opinion of another man’s column. His post may lead to some thinking Monahan is out of a job, but no other major golf publication has reported this, nor has the PGA Tour made it public.

That of course didn’t stop Mickelson from running with it though.

Ahead of the Hero World Challenge, Tiger Woods, one of the newest player members on the PGA Tour Policy Board, expressed his frustrations with the how the deal came about and how it was handled.

However, he didn’t give any hint that Monahan was out of a job.

“That was part of why I came on to the board is — I did have faith in Jay and in what he could do going forward and what can’t happen again,” Woods said.

So, while some may see “Bob” and Mickelson’s tweets and feel change is happening, that may not be the case. Monahan still has a job and the support of many players, including Woods himself.
